This is it. It’s difficult. Let’s talk about the current situation in Hawaii and tipping today. While Japanese tourists were not coming to Hawaii due to the pandemic, the tourism industry in Hawaii was supported by tourists from the U.S. mainland, without a doubt. And now, to cut to the chase, all the restaurants and eateries in Waikiki are now crowded with Americans. Tipping may be frowned upon more in Japan than in the U.S., but it’s a matter of “go local, do local” and it goes with the territory. In the old days, it was left at restaurants that provided table service, but nowadays, even take-out restaurants have tip jars. Incidentally, this is what I have heard, and since my restaurant does not require tipping, I dare to write this, but there are many restaurants that proudly say, “We don’t want Japanese tourists coming to our restaurants anymore. Americans leave a 20% tip even at ordinary restaurants. By the way, for those who don’t understand how it works, here is a simple explanation. If you have table service, you will be served by the same waiter or waitress as in most restaurants here. If the food is good, the atmosphere is good, the food is good, and the service is good, they used to leave 20%. Recently, however, some restaurants are showing 22%. For example, for a $300 meal, if the service is good, you will need to pay an additional $60 or more, or $360. If you pay by credit card, there is a box below the amount to add a tip. The usual system is to put the amount of money there, write the total amount below it, and sign your name. When I was working in the field for a travel agency, some people mistakenly thought that all tips were one dollar. Another time, at a famous cold noodle restaurant, a person who was clearly a Japanese tourist tried to leave without leaving a tip. When I advised him to leave a tip, he said, “No, no,” and hurriedly left the restaurant. If customers like this were to become rampant in Waikiki, it would obviously give Waikiki a bad name, and it is possible that they would stop providing normal service. This is my opinion, so if you have another opinion, please write to me. It has become an inevitable path. Facebook – konabayhawaiistore https://www.facebook.com/konabayhawaii/
