この写真は、2013年のもの。いつものようにダイヤモンドヘッドをランニングしていると、僕が1番欲しい車が置いてあった。誰もいなかったので、横から見たり、前から見たりしていた。その時、後ろから声をかけられた。白人の老夫婦である。「お前ポルシャ好きなのか？」と、おじいさんが。「はい。欲しいです。356が」と僕。「そうか。この車はわたしが1962年にドイツの買いに行ったんだよ。ステアリングも重いので、妻は運転しない。僕が生涯1台しか乗らなかった車なんだ」。うわ〜すげ〜。僕は恐る恐る「記念写真いいですか？」と尋ねた。もちろん。それからこの夫婦は、颯爽と去っていった。僕は後悔しないタイプだが、何故あの時「売ってくれませえんか？」と、云えなかったのだろう。彼らがいなくなったあと、僕は呆然と立たずんでいた。
This photo was taken in 2013. As usual, I was running around Diamond Head when I saw the car I wanted most. No one else was around, so I looked at it from the side and from the front. Then, someone spoke to me from behind. It was an elderly white couple. “Do you like Porsches?” asked the old man. “Yes, I do. I want a 356,” I replied. “I see. I bought this car in Germany in 1962. The steering is heavy, so my wife doesn’t drive it. It’s the only car I’ve ever owned in my life.“ Wow, that’s amazing. I cautiously asked, ”Can I take a commemorative photo?“ Of course. Then the couple walked away confidently. I’m not the type to regret things, but why couldn’t I ask, ”Can I buy it?” after they left? I stood there dumbfounded.
